Voters say US is out of control

Almost eight in ten Americans say the current situation in the United States is "out of control."

That's according to new CBS News-YouGov poll published Sunday, which found that 79% of respondents believe things are "out of control" in the country. Meantime, 21% of those surveyed believe things are "under control."

Among party lines, the poll shows 94% of Republicans, 56% of Democrats and 88% of independents think things are "out of control," compared to 6% of Republicans, 44% of Democrats and 12% of independents who think the opposite. Women (81%) were slightly more likely to say things are out of control compared to men (76%).

When asked how they feel about the state of the U.S. today, 73% of respondents said things are going badly in the country, while 36% of those surveyed said things are going well, according to the poll.

Democrats (73%) were more likely to say things are going well in the country, versus just 12% of Republicans and 18% of independents.

When it comes to President Joe Biden, 44% of those surveyed approve of his job in the Oval Office, while 56% of respondents disapprove.

Among party lines, 85% of Democrats, 10% of Republicans and 32% of independents approve of the way Biden is handling his presidency, versus 15% of Democrats, 90% of Republicans and 68% of independents who disapprove, per the poll.

With the midterm elections just over one week away, the nation is closely split on the top concern. The poll shows 56% of voters believe a functioning democracy is the biggest concern, while 44% think a strong economy is a bigger concern. Democrats (75%) are more likely than Republicans (35%) to be focused on democracy. On the other hand, Republicans (65%) are more likely than Democrats (25%) to be focused on the economy.

Among other issues that are "very important" to voters in their vote for Congress this year, the poll shows the economy (79%), inflation (76%) and crime (65%) top the list, followed by voting and election issues (63%), gun policy (62%), immigration (61%), and abortion (56%).

When it comes to political candidates, voters say the must share the same beliefs on the economy (73%), gun policy (72%), immigration (66%), abortion (65%) and what happened on January 6th, 2021 (60%) in order to get their vote, per the poll.

If Democrats win control of Congress, the poll shows 84% of voters think they will pass a national right to abortion law, 59% think they will open the U.S.-Mexico border, 53% think they will cut police funding, 51% think they will increase social security benefits, 47% think they will overturn Republican election wins, and 33% think they will lower taxes.

On the other hand, if Republicans win control of Congress, the poll shows 71% think they will increase U.S. energy production, 63% think they will impeach President Biden, 56% think they will pass a national abortion ban, 56% think they will overturn Democratic election wins, 48% think they will lower taxes, and 47% think they will cut social security.

The CBS News/YouGov Battleground Tracker survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,119 registered voters interviewed between October 26-28, 2022. The margin of error is ±2.4 points.
