Romaine lettuce served from Wendy’s fast food restaurants has now been linked to an E. coli outbreak in six states, including most recently Kentucky and New York, according to the CDC.

The CDC shared that at least 97 cases of E. coli have been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and New York. The agency added that most of the infections were in Michigan.

Some cases have been severe, with 43 people needing to be hospitalized. In New York and Kentucky, just one case each has been reported, though the CDC said the number of those sick from the outbreak is likely higher.

“The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,” the CDC said in a statement.

Of the 43 that were hospitalized, 10 have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication that could result in the patient having kidney failure.

Symptoms of E. coli, a bacterium that lives in the digestive tracts of humans and animals, include severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other possible symptoms, though less common, involve developing high fevers and life-threatening conditions.

There have not been any reported deaths from the outbreak at this time, the CDC shared.
