The State Department is revamping its online passport renewal service, as it launched an updated version of the website that makes it possible for travelers to skip the mail and upload their renewal request digitally.
While the website has launched, the rollout is reportedly being restricted to certain windows at midday Eastern time, starting at 1 p.m., according to the Wall Street Journal.
Once a preset daily limit for applications is met, the system will close, meaning travelers who missed out will have to try again another day.
If you are going through the process and receive a message saying you can’t start your application, then the daily limit has been met.
The State Department has released a video showing how those looking to renew can select and upload their passport photo to the website.
While the site might be useful, it is not permanent, as the department shared it is a limited-service run.
Normal processing sees passport renewals take six to eight weeks. Those seeking expedited service or have urgent travel needs will not see a benefit using the online system.
While the website is not new, the department did say it has been updated to help offer a better experience to users.
