LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion PIcture Arts and Science has decided to bar actor Will Smith from attending any events sponsored by the organization for a period of 10 years.

The temporary ban comes on the heels of Smith’s physical altercation with comedian Chris Rock during the 2022 Academy Awards.

“Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars,” a letter from the board released Friday read. “The board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but notlimited to the Academy Awards.”

The board went on to express “deep gratitude” to Chris Rock for “maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”

In response, Smith stated, "I accept and respect the Academy's decision."
