A Lowe’s employee in Georgia who was left with a black eye after trying to stop shoplifters from taking off with $2,100 worth of merchandise was recently fired from the company.
The employee, 68-year-old Donna Hansbrough, had worked at Lowe’s for more than 13 years but was let go after she intervened in a theft at her store in Rincon, Georgia.
The Rincon Police Department shared that Hansbrough spotted three people piling items into a shopping cart before making their way out of the store without paying last week.
Looking to stop them from taking off, Hansbrough grabbed onto the cart, which was allegedly being pushed by Takya Berry. Once she got a hold of the cart, Berry allegedly punched Hansbrough in the face three times, police said.
Police allege that Berry wasn’t alone while allegedly stealing from the Lowe’s store as police say her uncle, Joseph Berry, and another man identified by police as Jarmar Lawton were also with her.
Since the alleged incident, which left Hansbrough with a black eye and bruising from the punches she took, the Lowe’s employee has been let go for violating the company policy on interfering with thieves, according to a report from the Effingham Herald.
“They say that if you see somebody stealing something out the door, not to pursue, not to go out. I lost it,” Hansbrough told the Herald.
The now-former store employee told the media outlet that she didn’t “actually remember going out” and grabbing the cart, but she knew she did. She claimed that her instinct took over and that she couldn’t just watch the theft happen. She said she never thought it could lead to her losing her job.
“I just got tired of seeing things get out the door. I just, I lost it. I basically lost all the training. Everything they tell you to do, I just… I just lost it,” she said.
The police department shared that Lawton has since been taken into custody, but Berry and her uncle are still at large. Those with information about their whereabouts are asked to contact the Rincon Police Department at 912-826-5200.
