The annual 9/11 commemoration at the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum today will take a unique approach given the circumstances of  the COVID-19 pandemic.

The usual observance, one that brings as many as 800, will be presented via livestream from the presidential library’s outdoor Pat Nixon Amphitheater.

Only 50 sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and others will be allowed to attend the invite-only, socially-distanced ceremony.

Singers in the choir will be spaced apart, and a bagpiper will play from the roof, according to the OC Register.

“We really are putting health and safety first and foremost,”  Jim Byron, executive vice president of the Nixon Foundation told the OC Register.

The ceremony will be shorter this year and will contain religious moments, Byron added, to qualify as a “religious or cultural gathering,” which are allowed, with modifications, under coronavirus guidelines.

Earlier in the morning on Friday, Orange County Fire Authority stations and other departments and agencies across the county will commemorate the anniversary, coinciding with when the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Many plan to broadcast the solemn moments on their Facebook pages.

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes and Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy are expected to speak.
