*It was 10 years ago on this day, the Wichita Wild indoor football team won Champions Bowl I for the CPIFL championship at Hartman Arena, 47-34 over the Salina Bombers. This would be the first of back-to-back league championships for the Wild.
*Happy 76th birthday to a Kansas sports legend, left-handed quarterback Bobby Douglass. He was born in Manhattan, but grew up in El Dorado, where his dad was the head coach for Butler County community college. Douglass became an All-American quarterback at KU in 1968, leading the Jayhawks to an appearance in the Orange Bowl; he finished in 7th place that season in voting for the Heisman Trophy.
Douglass played for 11 years in the National Football League; he was a second-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears, and he also played for the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Green Bay Packers.
In 1972 for the Bears, Douglass set the NFL record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in one season with 968 yards on the ground, averaging seven yards per carry. That record stood for 34 years, until it was broken by Michael Vick, who played in more games in a season than did Douglass.
Douglass was an elite runner in the NFL, but did have some troubles passing.
