Wichita State University announced it is discontinuing its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs, effective immediately.
University officials said the move follows a comprehensive review of the athletic department’s structure and spending priorities. The decision comes as the university faces rising operational costs while working to maintain the long-term financial stability and competitiveness of Shockers Athletics.
"Today marks a difficult moment for our department. This decision was not made lightly and reflects deep and deliberate consideration,” said Director of Athletics Kevin Saal. "I have the utmost respect for Head Coaches Judd Easterling and Tom McCurdy and our student-athletes. Our men's and women's golf teams have a proud tradition and history and have represented Wichita State with integrity and distinction."
The university indicated the evaluation focused on balancing available resources across all sports programs. No additional details were immediately provided regarding the impact on student-athletes or coaching staff.
Wichita State has fielded both men’s and women’s golf teams for years, with each program contributing to the university’s athletic history. The announcement marks a significant change for the department as it reshapes its athletic offerings moving forward.
