Martin ran a mile in 3:57:98, shattering Jim Ryun's 1965 record.
Ryun broke his own record five times before graduating in 1964, becoming the first high schooler to run a mile in sub four minutes. Ryun's previous best time was 3:58.3, which Martin beat by less than a second.
Martin is the 14th American high school athlete to break the four-minute barrier, and his time ranks third all-time in outdoor running.
