The apparent regression of Patrick Mahomes has been one of the biggest narratives surrounding the 2021 Chiefs, and the internet certainly isn't short on opinions about it. While making is weekly appearance on 610's Fescoe In The Morning, Arrowhead Pride Editor-in-Chief Pete Sweeney tried to explain what exactly is wrong with Mahomes this year, and how concerned Kansas City should be going forward:
"It's unfortunate," Sweeney said. "It's a player whose signature and best part about him was when he played through what was this extremely rare muscle memory, in a sense, where you could have him play within the structure of Andy Reid, but there was a fearlessness about going about and seeing a play and almost anticipating that he could make through. And right now I don't think there's fearlessness. There's a little bit of fear of turning the ball over, of shooting the team in the foot. And granted, it's not just him. I think part of that goes into the defensive struggles, because Patrick Mahomes feels like if he turns the ball over too much they're going to lose another game. But yeah, I think you can really sense there's been a shift in the way he's playing. I think he's working through it, but I think you saw again [Monday night], there's a tentativeness there that wasn't there before."
"It's not something that I think could potentially cost you the year, but you've got to see in these next three games, him get back to what made him him."
