The Kansas City Chiefs opened their first full-squad training camp practice Wednesday without offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who remains in Virginia with his family after his wife, Mia Bieniemy, was seriously injured in a shooting.
Head coach Andy Reid shared an encouraging update, saying Mia is out of the intensive care unit and continuing to recover.
"She's doing great. She's doing better from where she was," Reid said. "Out of the ICU and making progress, so we're happy about that."
Reid said Bieniemy will stay with his family for as long as needed.
"EB's still with her, and that's important," Reid said. "Eric's a big part of this team, but right now he needs to take care of his family. He'll be back when the time is right."
Authorities in Virginia say the couple's 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested following the shooting and is facing multiple felony charges, including malicious wounding and firearm-related offenses. He is being held without bond as the investigation continues.
