There was more than one commotion in the stands at Yankee Stadium last weekend. In the seventh inning of Sunday night’s affair, a mysterious light shined towards home plate during DJ LeMahieu’s at-bat against Brandon Workman, briefly stopping play.
Given the prevalence of weird subterfuge, MLB launched an investigation into the episode. It found no rules violation by either team, reports the New York Post.
The light was flashing red and then turned white. After the game, Red Sox skipper Alex Cora said the minor disturbance “wasn’t a big deal.”
Fan behavior was a hot topic last weekend. A Yankees fan hit Alex Verdugo with a baseball during Saturday’s game, rightfully prompting a verbal rebuke from the outfielder.
Back in 2017, the Red Sox were busted for using Apple Watches to steal signs against the Yankees. The Red Sox also claimed the Yankees were using a camera from their YES television network to steal signs. That back-and-forth took place under John Farrell.
Cora, of course, was suspended by MLB for the 2020 season for his role in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing operation. The Red Sox rehired Cora as manager last winter.
The Red Sox were also accused of sign-stealing in 2018 under Cora’s stewardship. An MLB investigation blamed a rogue video operator.
The Red Sox won a franchise-record 108 games in 2018 and their ninth World Series.
