
Preston Snavely tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out five to help the Wichita State baseball team earn a 9-0 shutout victory over the Omaha Mavericks Saturday, March 27, at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field.
Snavely, a senior right-hander who hails from Fort Collins, Colo., allowed zero earned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none on 101 pitches to improve to 2-1 on the mound this season.
Jack Sigrist and Paxton Wallace each collected a pair of hits, leading the Shockers at the plate, while Garrett Kocis, Corrigan Bartlett and Ross Cadena each tallied doubles. Wallace, Kocis and Bartlett all drove in a team-best two runs in the shutout win.
Wichita State raced out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second inning and two in the third inning.
Cadena opened the scoring for WSU, plating Bartlett on an RBI fielder's choice in the second, prior to Kocis belting a two-run double to right-center in the third that plated Cornblum and Sigrist.
The Shockers ballooned their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the fifth.
Bartlett provided the big hit in the inning, hitting a double to left field to score Wallace and Sigrist. Kocis also crossed home plate on Bartlett's double after Omaha left fielder Parker Smejkal misplayed the ball for an error. A sacrifice fly by David VanVooren provided the final run of the inning.
The Shockers continued to build their lead with two runs in the sixth and made it 9-0 after Wallace hit a single through the right side, scoring Cadena and Cade Clemons.
Mike Boeve and Masen Prososki both compiled two hits, pacing the Mavs offensively.
Omaha starter Spencer Koelewyn (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs – six earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in five innings.
