The United States captured its first Olympic men’s hockey gold medal in 46 years, edging Canada 2–1 in overtime at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan.

After a tight, physical contest, Jack Hughes delivered the winner just 1:41 into sudden death, finishing a setup from Zach Werenski. The goal capped an unbeaten tournament run for Team USA and ended a gold drought dating back to the famed 1980 “Miracle on Ice.”

Matt Boldy gave the Americans an early lead, but Canada tied the game in the second period on a goal by Cale Makar. Canada pushed hard late and outshot the U.S., but goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stood tall with 41 saves to keep the game level.

The victory marked the United States’ third Olympic gold in men’s hockey and came exactly 46 years after the iconic 1980 triumph.
