The Clemson Tigers have set high expectations for new starting quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, and quite frankly, so has the nation, as the true sophomore currently owns the second-best odds to win this year's Heisman Trophy.
But will the immense pressure to thrive as Trevor Lawrence's successor affect Uiagalelei on the field? Clemson radio voice Don Munson doesn't believe so, since the former five-star recruit already has championship-caliber makeup.
"He has all the tangibles you want," Munson told The DA Show on Wednesday. "He's got the size, he's got the intellect, he's got the command in the huddle, and command of the team. He's already earned all of that type of respect. It's his offense, he's the leader out there of this offensive unit. He's got a cannon of an arm. He's got a bigger arm than Trevor did.
"And I believe, two years from now when the NFL Draft comes around, that D.J. Uiagalelei is going to be the first name called... I've seen the two, side-by-side. And I bet if you asked Trevor that, he would tell you this kid has a bigger and better arm than he had. And Trevor's arm was astronomical..."
As a true freshman last season, Uiagalelei completed 78 of 117 total passes for 914 yards with five touchdowns in 10 games. The 20-year-old started twice for Clemson while Lawrence was out with COVID-19, and racked up a combined 781 yards against Notre Dame and Boston College.
No. 3 Clemson will open the 2021 campaign against No. 5 Georgia in Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 4. According to the William Hill Sportsbook, the Tigers have the best odds (-800) to win the ACC title and the second-best odds (+400) to win the national championship.
