The dedication of Lawrence Stadium, Wichita’s then-new baseball stadium at Maple & Sycamore, took place 90 years ago on this day (1934).
The stadium had been under construction for several months, taking the place of old Island Park, which had burned down on the island in the Arkansas River north of the Douglas Street bridge.
Seating capacity at the new Lawrence Stadium was listed at approximately 4,000 patrons, with added bleachers able to accommodate a total crowd of 10,000.
