KNX Heroes face an unexpected situation, save an injured man's life

Law enforcement officers are trained to be ready for anything.

That training recently saved a life, when our KNX Helpful Honda Heroes of the Week faced an unexpected situation!

It was early morning; the patrol shift had just begun. Los Angeles County Transit Deputies Abel Gutierrez and Hector Gonzalez were leaving the Transit Services Bureau Headquarters. But, before they took off, Deputy Gutierrez checked the nearby Metro station, to make sure everything was okay. And it was, except for a man who was slowing walking towards their patrol car.

"He was walking closer to me, but I didn't really think anything of it," explains Deputy Gutierrez.

As he was about to drive off, Deputy Gutierrez realized that the man was in really bad shape, with a big cut across his neck. He immediately assessed the situation.

Was the man attacked? Are other people in danger?

He quickly alerted his partner, Deputy Gonzalez, and they jumped into action. They stabilized the man, grabbed the first aid kit from the patrol car, and quickly applied pressure to the man's neck.

"My partner and I coordinated with our units to check the location," says Deputy Gonzalez. "We also called for medical services."

LA Transit's Public Information Officer, Ramon Montenegro, says each decision was crucial. If there was potential danger, they needed to keep people in the area safe. Plus, the injured man was moments away from dying.

"Had they not deployed the combat dressing that they did, he probably would have bled-out before he got to the hospital," says Montenegro.

While treating the man, the deputies found out where he lived, and when paramedics arrived, they headed to his home. It was a situation where the deputies were going in blind, unsure of what they were going to find. It could have been a dangerous situation, and they had to be ready. Fortunately, the family was okay.

The story reminds us, of just how hard our law enforcement officers work to keep us safe, no matter the situation. Los Angeles County Transit Deputies Abel Gutierrez and Hector Gonzalez are our KNX Heroes of the Week!

"They go out on the line, every day. They keep you safe when you ride," remarks Montenegro. "making sure that everybody gets where they need to go, as safely as possible. And, in this instance, our deputies sprang into action, and did what they needed to do!"
