At least six have been hit and killed by cars in the Santa Monica Mountains in the last three months, biologists have said.

Joanne Moriarty with the National Parks Service tells KNX many of the wild animals have been displaced from their natural habitat from the recent wildfires.

"It does seem to be a little bit of a peak right now. We usually don't see this high of a level," she said.

She advises caution behind the wheel not just in the wilderness but in nearby urban areas.

"We are not asking anybody to endanger their life or swerve around, sometimes it is unavoidable to hit an animal but if you slow down a bit often that's just enough time for the animal to run out of the way," she said.

One bobcat that was struck and killed on Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas had earlier been tagged and identified as B-361 in the wake of the Woolsey Fire.
