According to a breaking news report by the New York Times, the whistleblower is a C.I.A. officer.
Not much else is known about the person except that three people are familiar with the officer's identity. The whistleblower's lawyers have not confirmed that he worked for the C.I.A. and that any information about him can be dangerous if published.
“Any decision to report any perceived identifying information of the whistle-blower is deeply concerning and reckless, as it can place the individual in harm’s way,” Andrew Bakaj, his lead counsel told the New York Times. “The whistle-blower has a right to anonymity.”
