(KNX 1070) - If you live near the L.A. River, in Burbank, Glendale and Atwater Village, your house could be at risk for catastrophic flooding.

The Army Corps of Engineers says a 13-mile stretch of the river is in danger of experiencing a so-called "100-year flood," and residents in those areas could soon be forced to buy flood insurance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now looking at whether to require about property owners in the area to buy flood insurance. More than 3,000 parcels are at risk on both sides of the river in Los Angeles, Glendale and Burbank.

The 2016 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study encompasses a 13 mile stretch from Barham Boulevard to First Street.

The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council is warning thousands of residents.

Karen Barnett, with the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council, says an Army Corp of Engineers study two years ago pointed out problems with the river in the area.

"From that 2016 study we know that approximately 50 percent of the channel volume has been lost due to sediment build up and vegetation over the years," she said.
