(KNX 1070) - Immigration customs enforcement officials are apparently out of room to lock up thousands of detainees.
ICE has thousands of detainees but is apparently running out of places to keep in them locked up.
Time magazine reports the government is in a rush to build new detention centers in Los Angeles, in San Diego, and in San Francisco.
According to documents from the Federal Business Opportunities website, "Each site must be capable of providing detention, medical, and transportation services, including the physical structures, equipment, personnel, and vehicles."
The LA site, which includes LA, Santa Barbara and other cities, would be able to hold between 2,800 to 3,000 detainees, according to the documents.
State lawmakers are gearing up for a fight.
State Senator Scott Wiener says "in California, we have taken steps to stop our local cities and counties from engaging with ICE. "
Here's immigration reform advocate Dave Ray.
"Like it or not, California is part of the United States of America. The federal government will expand facilities in California and elsewhere," Ray said.
Last March, Orange County sheriff's department put pressure of the Feds and ended a long-running deal to house ICE detainees in local OC jails.
OC Sheriff gave the Feds until July 1 to get hundreds of ICE detainees out of local OC jails.
