Just Released Video Shows Moments Leading up to Man's Death in LA County Jail

(KNX 1070) -  A new video was released Monday showing the moments leading up to the death of a man in an LA County jail nearly two years ago.

The video shows several deputies seen shooting pepper spray multiple times into the cell where Juan Correa Jr. and his cellmate at Men's Central Jail had allegedly gotten into a fight.

Correa's parents are suing the county for wrongful death. They're claiming their son, who had mental health issues, should never have been moved to the general population and that he was denied medical care when he began showing signs of distress. He died September 2017.

Attorneys for his parents say it was about 45 minutes from the time he began showing signs of distress before the fire department arrived.

Correa's mother, at one point, closed her eyes as the video played during a press conference Monday morning. She says she just wants justice for her mentally ill son.

"I feel a lot of pain in my heart," she said."We are here to seek justice because the County of Los Angeles let a human being die without justification," Attorney Michael Carrillo said. Both the county and the sheriff's department are reserving comment as this is pending litigation. The trial set for next April.

We reached out to the sheriff's department and since this is pending litigation, they were unable to comment.
