Mayor Eric Garcetti authorized LADWP to disconnect utility services at a house in the Cahuenga Pass that had hosted several large parties in violation of public health orders.
In August, he authorized the city to shut off LADWP service in egregious cases in which houses, businesses and venues are hosting unpermitted, large gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“COVID-19 has taken a devastating toll on our city and country. Yet the power to stop the spread of this virus and save lives rests in our hands — by wearing masks, washing our hands, keeping our distance, and avoiding large gatherings. The owner and residents of this home have failed to follow our public health orders and ignored multiple warnings to stop hosting large parties. So today, the City disconnected utilities to this house. Parties can spread the coronavirus, and any decisions to organize, host, or attend one can mean the difference between life and death," Garcetti said.
Last month, City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office has filed criminal charges against four people – two party hosts and two homeowners – for mega-parties that have reportedly been the source of outrage from neighbors.
A Hollywood Hills house, that repeatedly hosted several large parties in violation of public health orders this month, had its power cut by LADWP as authorized by LA Mayor Garcetti.
On Aug. 24, a house in the Cahuenga Pass was used to host a large gathering, according to the Mayor's press release.
"While those gatherings were in progress, the Los Angeles Police Department visited the property and posted warnings on the property, providing notice that violations of the Order are subject to civil and criminal penalties. The initial warning also provided notice that any future violation of the Order at this property may result in a referral to the Mayor’s Office for review and issuance of a directive to disconnect utility service," the press release said.
