Dinner plates with an iffy message?
That's what drove an LA-based journalist, who noticed dinner plates with an interesting message, to call out Macy's in New York City.
Alie Ward, whose Twitter handle is "Science/comedy@Ologies podcast host, CW’s Did I Mention Invention?, CBS's Innovation Nation, Brainchild on Netflix, Cooking Channel," said she saw the plates in a display at Macy's Herald Square location this past weekend, and was taken aback, according to stories in The Washington Post and Huffington Post.
The plates seemed to measure food portions by different types of jeans including "mom jeans," "favorite jeans" and "skinny jeans," with "skinny jeans" being the smallest looking portion on the plate.
The plates seemed to perpetuate body shame and promote eating disorders as related to portion control, which can be serious and life-threatening situations and issues for people.
The "mom jeans" plates were made by a brand called Pourtions for Macy's Story, an in-concept shop.
On the Pourtions website, the product description says "There’s nothing like broken-in, faded, ripped-in-the-right-place jeans. They look great, and more importantly, they fit great. So, keep your eye on the middle circle and you’ll always be in fashion." The plates run for $9.50 for one plate.
