During an hourlong NAACP virutal event Wednesday, leaders called for a national moment of silence lasting eight minutes and 46 seconds to honor George Floyd (12:45 p.m. PST) — marking the time that Floyd lay on the street with former Officer Derek Chauvin’s knee on his neck.
After nearly a week of protesting, changes across the country can be seen.
As several civil rights groups have called for defunding the Los Angeles Police Department, Mayor Erica Garcetti announced Wednesday, a proposal to reduce in the police department's 2020-2021 budget by $100 million to $150 million.
"We need to make a firm commitment to change," he said. "We need to make sure black Americans see an end to the days of murder in broad daylight and traffic stops simply because of the color of their skin."
