The NBA is turning to a high-tech COVID-19-detecting ring to help its players.
Slated to start the 2019-20 NBA season on the Walt Disney World campus in Orlando, Florida, the league has developed an extensive plan, creating a "bubble" for players to prevent coronavirus from spreading, with the option of wearing the Oura ring to help.
The NBPA sent a statement to the players union offering the $300 fitness app Oura ring. "The ring will track the health of the player and give early warning signs if a player is in danger of contracting the coronavirus," according to The Athletic.
According to GQ, the ring wasn't initially designed to detect or prevent coronavirus, but the technology does collect data which could help in learning symptoms.
"If we can provide insight into asymptomatic people who may be spreading the virus and help with earlier detection with this technology, it can inform better decision making, facilitate safety, and prioritize who gets testing and other health containment strategies," Executive chair of the Institute Dr. Ali Rezai told GQ.
