(KNX 1070) - It's the second horse death in four days for the Santa Anita racetrack.

A horse pulled up during a race Sunday and was euthanized Monday.

Another horse had to be euthanized Friday

It's the 25th death since December 26 although until last week there had been six weeks of safe racing and training.

The horse named "Spectacular Music" suffered an injury to the pelvis in the race.

Officials say they hoped he could be saved but the injury was too severe.

Of the 25 horses which have died since December, nearly all were trained by different trainers.

Only a couple of trainers had a second horse end up dead.

About half of the 25 were actually race related, while most of the others died during timed workouts.

Patrick Battuello of the website https://horseracingwrongs.com says:

"A lot of this is random, the killing fluctuates but is constant," Battuello said.

Alan Balch is head of the California Thoroughbred Trainers Association and tells KNX, the last six weeks shows it was the weather and the track.

"Since the track surface and track maintenance was changed, we had the safest racing in the world until the last two days," he said.

He adds during the early part of the year when so many horses died they had the same rules in effect at Golden Gate and did not have a lot of racing deaths.
