In a brief court appearance, Mark Steven Domingo firmly said not guilty after answering a few yes or no questions posed by the judge.
Prosecutors say the 26-year-old planned to set off an improvised explosive device at a political rally in Long Beach – a plot meant to cause "mass casualties."
He sought a bomb-maker through an associate who happened to be cooperating with the FBI and gave the informant nails for bombs he hoped would kill dozens of people, according to court documents.
Domingo was arrested in April after going to the site of the planned attack.
The Afghanistan war vet expressed support for violent jihad and spoke about potentially targeting police officers, churches, and Jewish people. He's charged with providing material support to terrorists and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.
