(KNX 1070) - Some residents in the San Gabriel Valley are less than thrilled with a new plan aimed at dealing with coyotes.

The goal is to keep the animals away rather than trapping and killing them.

A new plan aimed at "discouraging" coyotes from coming into neighborhoods isn't going over very well with some residents of the San Gabriel Valley. They're worried about their pets and their kids' safety.

The plan would not trap and euthanize them and instead use a gentler approach like not leaving pet food outside and levying fines for those who feed wild animals.

But residents who have had scary experiences with coyotes say that's not the right approach.

One resident, Nancy Marquez, had a cat dragged off about a year ago.

"Great cat but he would like to go out at night and I heard him get snatched by a coyote," she said.

The San Gabriel Council of Governments plans to try out the new plan.

West Covina will take a more aggressive approach including trapping and killing coyotes if necessary.

The plan will go before the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments for approval Thursday.
