A group of knitters are putting their skills to good use and helping to protect the animals being impacted by the devastating fires in Australia.
From pouches to nests, sweaters, and mittens, an all-volunteer Brisbane-based organization is handmaking protective gear for kangaroos, wombats, koalas, and wallabies.
Animal Rescue Collective has organized the effort to help save the burned paws of the more than 1 billion animals devastated since the fires began raging.
According to The University of Sydney, more than 800 million of the animals killed were living in New South Wales.
"It's events like this that may well hasten the extinction process for a range of other species," Professor Chris Dickman, of The University of Sydney and the expert who made the estimate, told National Public Radio.
The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in Charlotte, North Carolina has jumped in to help.
Reaching out to their local knitting groups to ask for help crating homemade nests to house Australia's injured animals.
The group hopes to mail several-thousand nests. They list the below items as the most needed:
