An LA City Councilman stands firm with activists in opposing a state bill that would extend the last call at bars.
The legislation by State Sen. Scott Weiner would give cities including LA, Long Beach, and West Hollywood, the power to push alcohol sales beyond 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.
Councilman Paul Koretz says at 2 am drunk people who want to get more drunk will be driving through my district to get to West Hollywood. And at 4 a.m. drunker people will be driving back through my district."
Melissa Estelle, who is with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, says "MADD is extremely concerned that eliminating the statewide cut-off limit on the sale of alcohol will encourage bar hopping. Patrons driving from one city to the next looking for one last drink."
Should the bill make it to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk, he may just sign off on it given that he's supported similar legislation in the past.
LA Mayor Eric Garcetti supports it as well.
