The city of El Segundo is calling on LAX to scale back plans for a major expansion of the airport.

Mayor Pro Tem Carol Pirsztuk tells KNX the proposals would hit residents hard:

"We have three things we are really concerned about, one is pollution, we are also worried about the noise and the other one is traffic. We need to ensure the traffic going in and out of the airport does not impact the locals, but also the local businesses," she said.

Documents newly released by Los Angeles airport officials call for an expansion and reorganization of the nation's second- busiest airport, including changes to existing runways and the construction of a passenger terminal east of Sepulveda Boulevard, it was reported. In a 142-page environmental document, city airport officials said the expansion would bring more sophisticated facilities for travelers, improve runway safety, and add at least 21 gates for domestic and international flights, the Los Angeles Times said.

One major source of worry is the plan for a brand new terminal Nine east of Sepulveda Boulevard. LAX is defending the expansion plans, saying they're aimed at modernizing the airport and improving both the passenger experience and safety.

Major underground utility work in connection with the renovation of Terminal 3 will necessitate the closure of three lower-level inner lanes at Los Angeles International Airport, an airport spokesman said today.

The shutdown of the three lower-level inner lanes of World Way will begin Monday and run through mid-August, LAX spokesman Charles Pannunzio said.

During that time the curb between Columns 3 C and 3 H will be unavailable for passenger pickup, Pannunzio said.

The shared ride van and taxi zones in that area also will be removed.
