(KNX 1070) - Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick has come back to haunt Sunday's Super Bowl game in Atlanta when the Los Angeles Rams take on the New England Patriots.

From the controversy over picking Maroon 5 for the half-time show, to reports that prominent singers like Rihanna refused to do the show, the former San Francisco 49ers ghost is everywhere.

Kaepernick hasn't played football in the NFL since 2016 when he became the focus of intense controversy over taking a knee during the national anthem before games to protest police brutality.

Mark Geragos is Kaepernick's attorney and was a guest on Friday's KNX In-Depth podcast where hosts Charles Feldman and Mike Simpson asked him about the kneeling controversy and how the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about Kaepernick this week but seemed to sidestep the issue.

It set off a debate that raged from the stands of NFL stadiums to front offices and all the way to the White House, with even the President of the United States weighing in on the controversy on social media.

Kaepernick is currently suing the NFL, charging that its owners have been colluding to keep him out of the league over the kneeling controversy.

Several A-list performers are said to have stayed away from performing at the Super Bowl in support of Kaepernick.
