(KNX 1070) -- Multiple sources reported early Tuesday that LA Mayor Eric Garcetti would announce that he was not going to make a run for president in 2020.

In Garcetti's scheduled news conference he gave his official statement that he would not make a bid for the White House.

Politico was the first to report that Garcetti would not run for president, but veteran California Democratic National Committee-member Bob Mulholland initially told KNX there wasn't really much reason for Garcetti not to toss his hat into the ring.

Over the last year, I have traveled across America and witnessed an America awakening in small towns and big cities across our nation. (1/4) EG

Garcetti's huge political victory with the deal he helped to forge with the Los Angeles teachers union to end a six-day strike that shut down schools and left more than 600,000 students in limbo, led many to think a run was almost a given.

I’ve seen cities and local leaders reinventing American manufacturing, cutting opioid deaths in half, and bringing 100% renewable energy to their towns. I saw a vision of a brighter future and a better day. (2/4) EG

In 2017, Garcetti was reelected to a second term in a landslide.

I am so excited to finish the work that we have begun here in Los Angeles. So I have decided not to throw my hat into the race for president in 2020. (4/4) EG

The Hill reported Garcetti's decision not to run may have something to do with the fact that last week California Sen. Kamala Harris threw her hat into the Democratic presidential ring, and as the field of contenders has reached more than 20, the LA mayor may have wanted not to enter the fray. Garcetti countered that idea at Tuesday's press conference, saying he was fully-supporting Harris, and fear of competition did not have an impact on his decision.
