Also called up to speak by the President was Army vet Oscar Stewart who rushed the shooter:

"We need to be strong as a group of people that love god whether you call him muhammed, whether you call him shiva...we need to be strong becuase that's the only way we are going to defeat evil," Stewart said.

The President said he would fight with all his strength and everything he had to defeat anti-Semitism.

The young man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue on Saturday, killing one person and injuring three others, has pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder charges.

John T. Earnest, 19, stood stoically and said little during the hearing, and the not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf by an attorney. He remains jailed without bail and is due back in court May 30.

Prosecutors say the 19-year-old man charged with opening fire in a Poway synagogue legally bought the semiautomatic rifle he used.
