Record-Breaking 33,000 Homicides in Mexico in 2018

(KNX 1070) -- According to a report released by Mexico's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, there were over 33,000 homicides in Mexico in 2018, a record-breaking number since the country began reporting. 

The document also states that there was a15 percent increase of homicides from 2017 at 28,866, to 33,341 in 2018. 

The number of women killed also went up from 861 in 2018 to 759 in 2017. 

Last year was additionally deadly for journalists with nine murdered. 

Many of the killings have been linked to drug cartel violence, with a mass grave discovered in 2017, that held more than 250 skulls of victims likely connected to the cartels.
