(KNX 1070) -- No, it wasn't an April Fool's Day joke -- a sales tax hike did, in fact, go into effect Monday in 51 cities in California.
The average statewide sales tax is 7.25 percent. Most of these increases are from 0.5 to 1 percent.
As a result of a 2018 Supreme Court decision, out-of-state retailers such as Amazon will be required to collect sales and use taxes from online shoppers.
