(KNX 1070) -- School official and parents in a state of shock after fifth-grade history teacher holds mock slave auction, with white students asked to 'buy' their black classmates.

Chapel School in Westchester, County, New York is a private school with tuition ranging from $5,000 to $13,900 a year.

The social studies teacher,  Rebecca Antinozzi, who is white, held the mock auction. She asked three black students to go out into the hallway where she pretended to shackle the students, playing the roles of slaves, with chains on their necks, wrists, and ankles.

The students were then asked to return to the classroom where the white students were urged to bid on them.

Chapel School principle Michael Schultz described the lesson as on the African Slave trade was "racial insensitive and hurtful."

She has been placed on leave, pending an investigation.

New York Attorney General Letitia James called the auction "racist," and "deeply" troubling.

Antinozzi, holds a Bachelor's degree in child studies from Syracuse University and a Master's degree in elementary and special education from Fordham University. She has worked at Chapel for four years.
