(KNX 1070) -- A teenager traveling with his family on a Royal Caribbean Harmony of the Seas Cruise ship fell to his death, officials say.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, Laurent Mercer, 16, from the French island collectivity Wallis and Futuna, had apparently left his key in his room, and was attempting to get to the neighboring 8th-floor balcony when he lost his footing and fell to the pier below.
The ship was in the middle of an 11-day Caribbean trip and at the time was docked at Labadee, Haiti, where Royal Caribbean owns a private resort.
"The ship's medical team responded to the pier and attempted CPR, but the [boy] had sustained major head trauma and he was pronounced dead," according to a statement from the medical examiner's office on Tuesday.
"We are saddened by the loss of one of our guests in a tragic accident," wrote Owen Torres, manager of corporate communications for Royal Caribbean in an email to the Sun-Sentinel.
This latest tragedy is just another in a series of bad news for Royal Caribbean. In December a crew member fell overboard and was never found and in early January, there was a Norovirus outbreak on Harmony's sister ship Oasis of the Seas which forced the cruise line to cancel the cruise.
