Two new bills are going before state lawmakers to beef up DUI laws.
The first would lower the legal level of blood alcohol from 0.08 to 0.05.
The second would require a first-time DUI offender to install an ignition interlock device on their car.
The bills are authored by Bay Area Democratic lawmaker Jerry Hill:
"Generally, when a person is arrested and convicted of drunk driving, they've probably been driving at least 80 times behind the wheel, drunk, before they get arrested. This will prevent them from getting behind the wheel," he said.
The bills are backed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
