It was initially reported that the LAPD had detained a person of interest in the rape of a woman at the Metro subway station in East Hollywood two weeks ago.

It comes less than a day after police released pictures of their prime suspect.

That was updated Friday morning when LAPD confirmed the man detained from a public tip has been cleared as a suspect in the rape.

The suspect is still at-large.

Earlier today reports circulated indicating a suspect had been taken into custody in connection to the rape that occurred on March 14 at the Sunset/Vermont Metro Station. We can confirm a male was detained based on a public tip but our Detectives determined he was NOT the suspect

They say the man asked the victim for directions and lured her to a secluded spot at the Sunset-Vermont station, where he sexually assaulted her.

He's described by police as a transient.

On March 14 in the 1500 block of North Vermont, the victim asked the suspect for directions, according to the LAPD press release.

The LAPD has put out a photo and a sketch of the suspect.

Police say he's suspected of committing a brutal sexual assault in the middle of the evening rush last Thursday at the Red Line station at Vermont and Sunset.

A spokesman says it took a while to review video and pick out the suspect.

Police say a woman in her 60s asked the man for directions.  He lured her into a "secluded" area, then strangled, punched and raped her.

Metro says that emergency exit stairwell is "patrolled regularly by security personnel."
