(KNX 1070) - Police are searching for a man who assaulted a member of the conservative group Turning Point USA at the University of California at Berkeley.

The member was punched in the face and the assault was caught on video by a number of students.

Both men can be seen engaging in a scuffle, then a heated argument, and then the man dressed in black can be seen punching the group member, and walking away.

The incident occurred at Upper Sproul Plaza on the campus earlier in the week.

Watch the video below from the Berkeley College Republicans Twitter:

The attacker overturned a table set up by the group that featured a sign reading "This is MAGA Country" and another that said "Hate Crimes Hoaxes Hurt Real Victims."

"Some students took offense to a sign that we had that said 'Hate Crime Hoaxes Hurt Real Victims,' and this person (was) claiming or promoting violence on campus and proceeded to take his aggression out on us," said Hayden Williams, the injured man, who was on Fox News Thursday night with a black eye.

The attack condemned by university authorities. A UC spokesman responded to the incident:

"The University condemns, in the strongest possible terms, violence and harassment of any sort, no matter who the perpetrators are, no matter who the targets are," the spokesman said.

The Berkeley College Republicans tweeted a copy of the video calling it a "leftist" attack.

...God-given rights to free expression. We hope the UCPD and the Berkeley administration shall take expedited action to ensure that the heinous individual who committed this crime is swiftly thrown behind bars.

Police say it's too early to say if this will be treated as a political hate crime.
