Britney Spears said she had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake in her new memoir.
PEOPLE Magazine was the first to report the excerpts from the singer’s highly-anticipated book.
The 41-year-old called the abortion “one of the most agonizing things” she’s ever experienced.
“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much,” she wrote. “I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.”
She added that Timberlake “definitely wasn’t happy” and said “they were way too young” to have a baby.
Spears and Timberlake’s high-profile relationship lasted from 1999 until 2002. Spears went on to have two kids with Kevin Federline, while Timberlake had two kids with actress Jessica Biel.
Timberlake has not issued a statement regarding the revelation.
"The Woman in Me" is set for an Oct. 24 release.
