CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 17-year-old north suburban resident, who's charged with murder for fatally shooting two people and wounded a third following a downtown Kenosha protest this week, will remain in custody in Illinois for another month.

A judge granted Friday a 30-day continuance in Kyle Rittenhouse's extradition proceedings during a brief status hearing.

Rittenhouse's public defender asked Judge Paul Novak for the delay as Rittenhouse’s family seeks a private attorney to represent him.

The court proceeding was about a minute long and was done via Zoom. Rittenhouse's case will next be taken up in north suburban Lake County Court on Sept. 25.

Kenosha County prosecutors on Thursday evening filed charges accusing Rittenhouse of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide, two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18.

An intentional homicide charge amounts to a first-degree murder charge in Illinois. The reckless homicide charge amounts to a second-degree murder charge in Illinois. If he is sent back to Wisconsin, Rittenhouse will be charged as an adult and faced life in prison if convicted.

In a complaint, Rittenhouse is accused of using an AR-15-style gun to shoot and kill 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum, and minutes later after tripping and falling as people chased him after the first shooting, allegedly shooting and killing 26-year-old Anthony Huber and wounding 26-year old Gaige Grosskreutz late Tuesday night.

The complaint said Rosenbaum was shot and killed when, according to a witness, he grabbed for Rittenhouse’s gun as the teen was guarding a car lot. It was right after that, video shows Rittenhouse calling someone to say he had just shot someone. The two other victims were shot a couple of minutes later.

After the shootings, Rittenhouse walked towards and then was passed by police who had been heading to a report of shots fired.
