Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympic gold medalist, reality TV star and candidate in the California gubernatorial recall campaign, revealed the plans for the state if she were to become governor.
Jenner called into KNX In-Depth Wednesday afternoon to talk about her run for governor, the Gavin Newsom recall, and trans athletes and sports.
TAXES and HOMELESSNESS
How does she plan to bring down high California taxes and solve the grave homelessness crisis?
"We are the most regulated state in the nation and if there was a survey put out on each state on how friendly it is to business, out of 50 states, we were ranked 49th," she says.
She says governors have veto powers.
"You can stop all regulations. Right now we have 22.2 million words of regulations on the books, on businesses, and the people of California. You can, as governor, put a stop to that.... You can review these regulations to make it easier to be able to do business in this state," she says.
What about homelessness?
Jenner says she is a very "hands-on" person adding she lives in the LA area.
"We are down about 3 million housing units in the state of California. Why? Because we can't build in the state anymore," she says.
She says she believes in a public and private group that can solve the homeless problem.
She says there are religious organizations, like the Salvation Army, who want to help with housing and they can't do it because there are "too many regulations."
"We have to able to get affordable housing," Jenner says adding real estate is expensive in the state.
"We have to clean up these neighborhoods and find a place to put these people," she says. "But in our public areas we have to be able to keep the homeless out of those areas."
NEWSOM RECALL
The current governor, Gov. Gavin Newsom, is facing a recall. Enough signatures have been rounded up to qualify for the ballot.
"Gavin Newsom has been the worst governor we have had in the history of the state with all due respect to Grey Davis," she says adding he's done a "horrible job" with the pandemic response. She gave an example of how Disney World in Florida opened up last year but Disneyland in Anaheim reopened in April.
"The reason for the recall is because of the way he shut down our school systems down," she says.
THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
Jenner also tackled former President Trump's influence on the Republican party. She is running as a Republican in the governor race.
Jenner says "I am an inclusive Republican. What I'm saying is on the Republican side, as far as the economy, an economy with good conservative ideas and conservative ideas work."
"Joe Biden is president right now and Donald Trump is not the president," she says.
She says she doesn't want to be put in a "box."
"I want the Republican Party to come to me. The Republican Party needs to be more inclusive," she says.
"I consider myself the new face of the Republican Party and I want the Republican Party to change. I want the image of the Republican Party to change because we need change. I am the poster child for change," she says.
SPORTS
Jenner told TMZ that she believes that if you’re born a biological boy, you should not be allowed to compete in girls’ sports while in school, adding it was “a question of fairness.”
Jenner says it's a "non-issue in California but I stand with my statement. I don't want biological boys competing against girls. We have to protect women sports in this state. The issue is much bigger than that. I didn't say trans athletes. We have to protect girls' sports. We can do that."
In April, Jenner announced she was running for the office.
"Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision" and that "for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people," Jenner said in a statement.
Jenner, 71, a trans woman, "is very socially liberal,” her adviser told Axios. "She's running as someone that's socially liberal and fiscally conservative."
In May, she released her first campaign video.
Jenner had her first in-person campaign event with Fox News in May.
