Warner Bros. released a trailer for the film, and in it, the “Unforgiven” star encapsulates a role he has spent his entire career perfecting — the world-weary cowboy grappling with regret and searching for redemption.
Eastwood, who also produced and directed the movie, stars as Mike Milo, a former rodeo star in his twilight years who journeys to Mexico to bring the son of an ex-boss back home to Texas.
From the looks of the trailer, the Western drama, which is set in 1979, deals with some quintessential Eastwood themes.
The teaser includes choice words of wisdom and reflection from the old timer, like “I used to be a lot of things — but I’m not now” and “I’ll tell you something — this macho thing is overrated.”
But the film is ultimately about hope. As such, it includes awesome shots of Clint on a horse and sweeping panoramic views of him driving his truck through the wide-open west.
Eastwood spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the film.
"It's about a man who has been through some hard times in his life and then unexpectedly another challenge is brought to the foreground," he told the outlet. "He would normally never do it but he is a man of his word. He follows through. And it starts his life over again."
According to EW, the movie is adapted from a 1975 novel of the same name by N. Richard Nash. And while this isn’t the first attempt at getting the film made — Eastwood was in talks to star in the film in 1988, and over the years, other stars including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Pierce Brosnan and Burt Lancaster have been attached — it is finally getting made and so perfectly Eastwood.
“Cry Macho” premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Sept. 17.
