(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago emergency room doctor is bracing for a potentially busy summer.

Dr. Robert Needleman of Cook County Health said over the summer of 2020, the focus was COVID-19.

“This year should be interesting,” he said. “It’s hard to gauge exactly what to expect. I think we’re anticipating that people are going to be so excited to get back out and into their normal summer routines that we’ll start to see more of the classic presentations to the emergency department during the summer.”

Those include everything from orthopedic injuries for those out playing sports to patients suffering from dehydration.

“People are outside, drinking alcohol and the weather is hot. That can be a dangerous combination,” Dr. Needleman said.

His advice? Have fun, but slow down and be smart.

“I feel like everybody is very excited,” he said. “That’s extremely warranted and justified. But make sure we’re doing our outdoor activities appropriately and safely.”
