One person died Wednesday morning after a single plane crashed in Shafter, Calif., a city in Kern County about 20 miles west of Bakersfield.
The crumbled aircraft, believed to be an agricultural crop duster, reportedly crashed on North Driver Road, a quarter mile from the Minter Field Airport just before 12 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing the crash as the plane exploded upon impact.
Kern County Fire Department and other emergency officials responded to extinguish the fire. The only person aboard the aircraft was the pilot, officials said, confirming the pilot had died before they arrived.
The aircraft belonged to a crop dusting company located in Shaft Airport, Jonathan Hudson, general manager of Shafter Airport District, told KGET.
Officials said the plane wasn’t carrying any hazardous items.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, saying an investigator will be on at the scene on Thursday morning.
