On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies announced that an arrest was made in one of the Fourth of July shootings that happened in Compton.

Sheriff Robert Luna says investigators now believe two separate, unrelated shootings happened just moments apart that night. One took the life of 19-year-old Meah Bordenave-Jenkins, while the other took the life of 37-year-old community advocate Eric Washington.

Luna announced 54-year-old Antoine Jones was arrested in connection with Bordenave-Jenkins’ murder.

No arrests have been made in Washington’s murder.

“There were hundreds of people at this gathering,” Luna said. “Somebody knows. Somebody saw, or somebody heard what happened. Even the smallest piece of information could help our detectives identify those responsible and bring justice to Eric's family.”

Both Bordenave-Jenkins and Washington’s mothers spoke at the press conference. Bordenave-Jenkins’ mother described her daughter as compassionate and hardworking.

“She had a plan. She had a vision board,” her mother said. “She was executing what she wanted to do in life.”

Washington's mother remembered her son for the impact he made as a community advocate.

“I'm going to miss him a lot,” she said. “I feel bad for the city of Watts. They had his heart.

Not only Watts. Compton did too, and I am so sorry for the loss that everyone will feel, and I'm just praying, praying, praying that we get more Erics in this world.”

Anyone with any information on Washington’s death was urged to call the LASD's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
