While the 10 Freeway is still shut down, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation announced that the fares on Commuter Express and DASH buses would be free until further notice.
Laura Rubio-Cornejo, general manager of LADOT, said on Tuesday that while Monday's morning commute did not result in gridlocked streets, the evening commute was a different story.
“The evening commute saw [a]much higher degree of congestion in the impacted area,” she said.
Local officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, have been urging the public to consider taking public transit since the 10 Freeway was shut down.
“We want them to use public transportation. There will be increased buses and trains,” Mayor Bass told L.A.’s Morning News. She added that security on trains would be increased.
One woman who rode the Metro on Tuesday morning told KNX News’ Jon Baird she loved it.
“It was comfortable. It was a smooth ride and it was reasonable,” she said.
State and local officials announced on Sunday that the 10 Freeway would be shut down in both directions following a fire.
Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday that a preliminary investigation has indicated the fire was started with "malice intent,” adding that CalFire detectives were working on identifying a suspects or suspects.
Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Bass will hold a press conference at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday on whether the 10 Freeway will be fixed or torn down and rebuilt.
Anyone with any information regarding the fire was urged to call 800-468-4408.
